11. Abstract
The progress of lysis along the filaments of virus-infected algae, Plectonema boryanum, has been followed by means of time-lapse photography using phase optics. The period of time required to lyse cells is approximately 45 seconds. It is suggested that viral DNA is formed in the nucleoplasm. From there it is thought to move into spaces between the photosynthetic lamellae, where comparatively large helices measuring 180 A in diameter begin to develop. These in turn move into the virogenic stroma where the helix receives its protein coat and is compressed into the shape of the mature particle. The conformation and nature of the helix are discussed.
