14. Summary

This brief paper provided the most comprehensive review up until this time on the algal pyrenoid. It represented the senior author's interest in the function of this this unique organelle which, at that time, had really not been elucidated. A symposium was held on this topic and this summarizes the panel's discussion. The review starts with the introduction of the pyrenoid by Schmitz in 1882
