206. Preface:
A perspective from the biosynthesis of cellulose microfibrils to cellulose-derived microfibrillar carbon
This special `double issue' of CELLULOSE is the brainchild of Prof Wolfgang G. Glasser who suggested that a special issue be devoted to aspects related to Molecular Biology and Biosynthesis of Cellulose. We felt that the community of biologists in general, and those of us who study cellulose on a regular basis, would benefit the most if we could assemble articles not only related to cellulose biosynthesis and molecular biology but also those that directly or indirectly influence and extend our views in terms of structure and other applications in this field. We have been very fortunate in having leading researchers in the field of cellulose biosynthesis and structure contribute to this special issue and we appreciate their patience. We found that the articles in this issue emphasize the large number of questions that remain to be answered and the research methods that are being applied to obtain the answers in this field. In this issue, we have taken the liberty to organize these articles in a manner that we feel highlights the different directions of cellulose research. We hope you will enjoy this special `double issue' of CELLULOSE.
