36. Abstract

The purpose of this article is to review and summarize certain publications and to assess the present state of the field of algal virology. This paper includes comparative descriptions of the known morphological, chemical, and physical properties of all presently known algal viruses. It covers pertinent aspects of research into the infection cycle as it relates to normal conditions of host and virus development as well as altered states. The concluding remarks are devoted to the ecology of algal viruses and the impact of these viruses as potential biological control agents. A comprehensive bibliography on algal viruses (through January, 1972) is included.
