September 11, 2003
This day, two years ago, a terrible
tragedy was brought
upon our Country. We will
never forget this. We
are strengthened by it, and each
year, we seek to
resolve more than ever before,
a world with peace and
to prevail on humankind.
Toward that end, please engage yourself
with eight pieces
composed in honor of this solemn day, so that we shall
never ever forget what happened to so many innocent people.

8:46AM Time Stood Still
The Pentagon on fire....disbelief... sorrow
Futile efforts to find her
That night.....disbelief, worries, the search
for relatives begins in earnest
A field in Pennsylvania......
Our families...lost but not forgotten
The smoke, the fireball, the people falling.....
Why?....Why NY? Why us?

A note added: Today, September, 10, 2003, I lost
a very good friend, Professor
Moshe Benziman of the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem who passed away due to a long illness. Moshe worked for nearly
a year in my lab when I was at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is widely recognized
for seminal contributions to the field of cellulose biosynthesis. He surely
will be missed. My condolences are with his family today.
